One of the floral glories of Italy is the sight of the fields where lentils are grown high in the Apennines. The stoney fields, irrigated by waters from the melting snow on Monte Vettore and its companion peaks that ring the vast plateau that is the Piano Grande, become a riot of colour in late June and early July when the ‘fioritura’ takes place.
Lentil flowers are tiny, white and insignificant and the poppies and cornflowers are sown in profusion as indicators….when they finish flowering the lentils are ready to be harvested. The region is famous for the culinary quality of its tiny lentils and local restaurants serve a delicious lentil soup. Other crops include chickpeas, fodder vetch and the primitive grain grown by the Etruscans, ‘farro’ or spelt.
We have taken tens of thousands of photographs here and make use of both early morning and evening light. We also know of places off the beaten track, away from other visitors for those who, like us, enjoy their flower-filled fields without humans in them.
At weekends in the flowering season, Castelluccio di Norcia becomes a magnet for sightseers so we run this workshop during the week. Tragically, Castelluccio was devastated in the earthquakes of 2016 and during 2017 access was severely restricted since the three roads leading to the Piano Grande were all severely damaged. Roads have since opened to this area.

What's included
- Pick up to and from airport (usually Rome). Flights to be coordinated with others in group but we aim to pick people up around midday on the first day and drop people back at the airport on the last day again, at around midday.
